The new $17m oncology facility at St John of God Murdoch Hospital has reached a construction milestone with the development topping out, signalling the new cancer-care facility is on track for practical completion by November 2021 and opening in early 2022.
The project’s construction partner Built, developer Centuria Capital Group1, and leading global oncology provider GenesisCare celebrated with St John of God executives at a ceremony on the development’s newly completed rooftop.
Located in Perth’s southern metropolitan area, the private radiation oncology facility will provide 1,825sqm of healthcare space across three-levels. It will have capacity to treat up to 1,000 cancer patients a year and will be fully integrated into the Murdoch Hospital.
The building will feature two radiation bunkers, consulting suites, first and secondary recovery rooms and ground-breaking theranostics and nuclear medicine services including the latest molecular imaging equipment.
Patient care would be enhanced with the completion of the radiation oncology bunker, with many patients previously travelling to other locations to receive radiation oncology services. For those who are too unwell to travel, including the many patients who receive palliative care at Murdoch Hospice, it will mean being able to benefit from services accessible in one location. All patients, private or public, will be able to access the service with the cost of treatment largely covered by Medicare rebates.
Jon Stone, Built Director, said, “Using our significant healthcare experience, Built is proud to deliver this critical piece of infrastructure which will aid in the delivery of outstanding healthcare within the community. Throughout a challenging year, operating amidst a COVID-impacted environment, Built has demonstrated our nimble and responsive capabilities delivering this complex project in just eight months.”
Andrew Hemming, Centuria Healthcare Managing Director, added “Modern healthcare properties, which provide integrated and cost-effective care, are much needed within Western Australia and we are proud to partner with GenesisCare and St John of God to deliver this comprehensive cancer care service. When complete, we believe this oncology unit will be a game changer for local cancer patients due to its proximity to St John of God Murdoch Hospital and complementing healthcare facilities.”
Centuria Capital Group is increasing its development of core assets with $1.7billion under development, in construction or committed to projects. Centuria has developed strong relationships with its delivery partners, such as Built.
With considerable experience across a range of sectors including health & aged care, commercial, retail, residential, hospitality & hotels, heritage and government, Built’s West Australian portfolio continues to grow.
Located within the St John of God Murdoch Hospital site, the oncology facility provides good accessibility via the Murdoch Railway Station, Kwinana Freeway and is a c.15-minute drive from Perth’s CBD.
1 The site is being specifically developed by Centuria Healthcare Direct Medical Fund No. 2 (CHDMF2)
